Coney Island Sauce

A few weeks ago my husband participated in Groupon, they were offering a discount at Super Dog in downtown Portland. We went to town on a Saturday and had the best double smoked sausage dog covered in a Coney Island Sauce. I have had this sauce once before, but this was my husband's first time. We really loved it so much, that of course, we just had to make it at home. So, we stopped at Haggen's Grocery on the way home, and found some double smoked Zenner's sausage that we could use just like Super Dog did. Just think, a soft hogie roll with a BBQ smoked sausage covered in Coney sauce then smothered in melted cheddar cheese, OMG I just can't stop drooling.

1 Lbs. - Lean Ground Beef
1 Medium - Onion, minced
3 Cloves - Garlic, minced
1 Tsp. - Chili Powder
1/8 Tsp. - Black Pepper
1/8 Tsp. - Cayenne Pepper
1 - 8oz. - Can Tomato Sauce
3 Tsp. - Ketchup
2 Tsp. - Seasoned Salt
1/2 Tsp. - Oregano
3 Cans - Water (using the tomato sauce can)

Brown the beef in a frying pan over medium high heat, breaking up the meat into small pieces. Add the onions and sweat them with the meat. Once the meat is cooked and the onions are tender add the rest of ingredients. Stir and simmer the sauce for up to 3 hours, then serve over your favorite dog and toppings.

Yup, just printed that puppy out - I recently saw this sauce on a Diner, Driveins and Dives - of course you know I'll leave out the onion! :D
